The descent from the cross (ephemeral) (after Max Beckmann)

36” x 36” x 6” deep
Household enamel on stacked Priority Mail boxes

Descent from the cross (ephemeral)In the spirit of one of Max Beckmann’s most powerful works, this is offered as an indictment of inhumanity.

Because it is unlawful to put the Priority Mail boxes to an end use other than postal service, the artist chose them as his ‘canvas’ to underscore the fleeting nature of belief, awareness and even intransigence.

At the conclusion of exhibition, all twenty-five boxes will be shipped, as is, to twenty-five different addresses all across the country. In direct contradiction to the usual practice of salvage artists turning ephemera into art, this piece turns art into ephemera.

This is on view at the Tuscarawas County Center for the Arts through December, 2007.

The artist wishes to thank LeeAnne Martin Photography for sponsoring this project.
